Some ideas are just so mad, that they are brilliant at the same time. And what a super idea this idea is, to capture the power in the road for all to charge and use. And there are just endless miles of roads in the world. Enough to light a household for an entire year. These solar panels can be used to power up not only light the roads at night but maybe the world? So you see the potential is pretty amazing.
The solar panels are inserted between glass, silicon rubber along with concrete, and are strong enough to endure the weight of 12-tonne fire trucks without getting crushed or broken. Every single panel is hooked to a smart meter, which harvests the electricity and feeds it straight into street lighting, or the electrical network.
There is a non-adhesive coating applied on the top of the road and the road has been built with a slight slanting, these measures were taken to prevent the accumulation of dirt and dust on the solar cells. These panels can capture huge amounts of sunlight and the panels are designed to last for 20 years.
Initially, as a trial, more than 150,000 cyclists were made to ride over these solar panels and no damage was caused. The solar road was complex and not without some technical difficulties within its design; there were temperature fluctuations that resulted in some de-lamination, all caused as a result of the contraction of the skid-resistant coating on the panels. It took the designers almost 5 years to make these panels tough and sturdy. But now with only some minor enhancements, they have to be made to make it a complete success.
